RE: Most dangerous cake in the world

Made this as a treat for my wife tonight. It was ok, but had a bit of an odd, spongy texture. Great recipe for when someone is trying to get a quick chocolate fix.

RE: Very cold in Bunk ends

Aaaah...you guys need to figure out that you need to take Chuck_S with a grain of salt. He has a different way of looking at things sometimes from what I've seen(dry humor), but is pretty helpful overall. Don't take yourselves so seriously.

Green chili recipes

Anyone have any interesting green chili recipes? I had a tomatillo based green chili with roasted pork at a local restaurant and it was great. There is a chili cookoff at my church in early oct and i'm thinking of trying something completely different.

RE: How to keep the bumper end caps on

I have the same ones as Chuck S. Work great. Haven't lost one yet.

RE: Very cold in Bunk ends

We use an oscillating electric heater. Just have to be able to get it up high enough so it directs the heat into the bunk end. It gets absolutely toasty warm and no condensation issues. We use the pop-up gizmos only in cold weather.

RE: Broken Stove Vent Flap

I went through two of the standard plastic ones and finally got ticked off and did a little mod. I filed the flap down where the tabs where until I got down to just the flat flap (ie - I filed the entire lengthwise ridge off.). Then I picked up a little 1/8" brass rod at a hardware store and cut it to the appropriate length. I drilled a bunch of little holes (just big enough for some thin steel wire to feed through) down the length of the flap and then used the wire to safety wire it into place. Probably cost me all of $5 and a half hour time, most of which was filing the ridge off by hand. One could use a grinder and this would be a 10-minute job. I haven't had any issues with it since. That said....the flaps made by Staggerlee look a whole lot better.

Golf carts!?

Up in our neck of the woods (Minnesota and Wisconsin, specifically), it's my humble opinion that the golf carts at private campgrounds are getting out of hand. It used to be that you'd go to a campground and run into an occasional golf cart that was used by someone who actually needed it to get around. Now it seems to be the ultimate status symbol at the private campgrounds. People drive around with their coolers of beer and tour campgrounds. They get bored sitting on their butts drinking, so they jump on the carts every hour on the hour and cruise around exercising their right to be fat, drunk, and stupid, I suppose. It gets a little obnoxious for those of us that are actually trying to relax and escape a little of the noise and normal stupidity that we have to deal with all of the time. Most of these people are coming from the seasonal sites. I hate to be a jackhole, but those same people get all uppity if weekenders even walk through their area looking at their sites, etc., so why do they feel so compelled to cruise around gawking at all the weekenders? We had a situation recently here in Minnesota where a guy got killed at a campground after falling off a golf cart and hitting his head. Unfortunate case. Alcohol played a part in the incident (last I heard for both the victim and the driver of the golf cart). I really don't need these people cruising around all drunk and stupid putting my small kids at risk. We have one campground that we really, really like in southeastern Minnesota. We try to camp their a couple times a year at a minimum. They are very good overall, but they've been expanding their seasonal sites. Along with this, it's seeming to me that the golf carts are starting to get out of hand as well and it's making us wonder if we really want to go back. Of course, we'll probably go back, but we'll get our polite feedback to the owners of the campground if it continues to get out of hand. Sorry for the vent. Anyone care to comiserate or otherwise offer their thoughts?

RE: Memory Foam May Have Saved Me $8,000 and the Jayco 26L.

We have a three inch one in our Antigua. I was having a rough time sleeping on the bunk end as I was getting terrible back aches. Added the memory foam and I'm just fine now. Love it. We have to roll ours up and we tuck it in the dinette during travel. It's really not too much extra setup time for us to roll it out. Just an extra minute or so and it's worth it.

RE: New diesel TV advice

We currently tow a very light HTT, Starcraft 18RB with GVW of 3500lbs. I'm looking to upgrade my tv to a Silverado 2500 duramax. Reason is we will probably upgrade to a new bigger trailer sometime down the road. My question is, for those who have diesels, what kind of mileage do you get or would expect towing something as light as ours? We have a Silverado 2500 Duramax/Allison and tow a 4500lb. hybrid. We get about 12mpg at 70mph and about 14 at 62mph. There's not a lot of weight but you still have a lot of surface area to create wind resistance. I've got the same setup and get right around the same mpg. I don't know how the other guy with a 28 footer at 7000 lbs was getting 14-17 towing. Maybe he can share what the deal is on that....any modifications to the truck that improved the fuel economy? There's no way my 2006 would get that kind of economy pulling that load. Just curious.

Curry recipes?

I'm in the mood for some curry and I'd like to try my hand at making something myself rather than going out or using (gasp) a jar or canned curry sauce. Anyone have any proven recipes they can share? Something on the order of a chicken or beef curry or maybe even vegetarian options like spinach or Abu gobi, etc.

RE: Looking for a Stove Top Coffee Pot

well, I just made my first pot with the Nissan thermos french press and it turned out really good. At first, I pushed the plunger down too quickly and pressed to hard at the bottom and I ended up with some coarse grounds in the first cup. I put the coffee back in and replunged it nice and slowly and didn't apply much for pressure at the end and it turned out perfect. This is the first cup of french press I've had. It does have a slightly different texture. A little more rich and a nice creamy texture. I think I'll like this little pot.

RE: Looking for a Stove Top Coffee Pot

Just ordered a Nissan Thermal stainless stell french press this morning. We have a Melitta two-serving drip that works well, but I was thinking of trying a french press to simplify things even more (ie - no filters, can make more than two servings, keeps the coffee heated, etc.). For the french press, do you go with a coarser grind on the coffee then? We use whole bean coffee, so we can grind it however we want.

Bunk cable problems?

Anyone with a hybrid that has cables supporting the bunk ends encountered any troubles with them? My sister and her husband have a Rockwood Roo (new last year) 23SS and they just noted this weekend that the upper cable mounts on the front bunk were coming loose. It's almost like the four screws holding the clamp support on were way overtorqued. The clamp was pulling away from the front bulkhead and my brother-in-law could pull the bolts out with his fingers. I hadn't heard of this happening before, but thought I'd check here to see if anyone has experienced this. They dropped their RV off at their dealer on the way back from camping this weekend. Hopefully the dealer will identify what the problem is and fix it right away.

RE: Dutch Oven Ribs or Brisket

I'm making Byron's brisket recipe this weekend when we go camping. I actually made the sauce in advance at home. Used Guinness as my beer of choice. The sauce seems to have great flavor, but it's still pretty thin. Just wanted to check in with those of you that have made this recipe and see if that's the norm or if I should cook it down to reduce it some more. Thanks.

RE: Charcoal, your thoughts

I too have noticed Kingsford's quality has seemed to go down. Turns to ash much faster and I always find myself worrying after only a short time whether there is still enough heat there to finish the cooking in the dutch oven.

RE: New camp chair

Received the LaFuma that I bought for my wife within 3 days of ordering it, but this past weekend was the first weekend we used it. There were four adults camping and we all wanted to take our turns in that chair. Very comfortable. My wife thinks I should get one for myself too, but I think she just wants me to have one so I'm not tempted to steal hers so often!!
